How do I use the Advent Calendar

How to open

If you have the Advent Calendar running but not open, simply double click on the snow globe. You can also single click on the snow globe and select "Enter Village" or "Enter London" from the menu.

If you have closed the Advent Calendar then please use the following directions:

PC:

If you chose to install a desktop icon when you installed the Advent Calendar then you can click on the icon to open the calendar. If you do not have a desktop icon then you will need to click on the "Start" button in the lower left-hand corner of your screen. Then go to All Programs and select "JL Alpine Advent Calendar" or "JL London Advent Calendar" folder from the list. Lastly, click on the Advent Calendar icon.

Mac:

You may be able to click on the Apple button in the upper left-hand corner of your screen and find the Advent Calendar in the Recent Items list. If you do not see the Advent Calendar in Recent Items then please click on the "Go" button at the top of your screen. Select the Applications option from the menu. Click on the "JL Alpine Advent Calendar" or "JL London Advent Calendar" icon from the new window.

Using the Advent Calendar

When you first have the Advent Calendar open, you'll see a number of Christmas decorations or "baubles". These are colour-coded: the one corresponding to the current date is red, those for previous dates are green, and those which are in the future are gold. You can click on the red and green ones to view the corresponding animation. You cannot click the gold ones!

View today's animation

Today's animation will be marked with a red bauble. Simply click on the red bauble to see the animation. You will automatically return to the main scene once the animation is finished or you can click the "Return to Village" or "Return to London" link in the lower right-hand corner at any time.

View a previous day's animation

The bauble for each previous day will be green. You can click on the green baubles just like the red bauble for today's animation. When you return to the Village or London, the calendar at the bottom of the page will display the same day as the animation you just viewed. Don't worry, all of the baubles through today's date will still be green and you can click on any of them.

For example: On 8 December, the baubles marked 1 through 7 will be green and the one marked 8 will be red. If you click the bauble marked 3 then you will see the animation for 3rd December. When you return, the calendar will show 3 December and the background scene will be as it was on that day. Baubles 1, 2 and 4 through 8 will all be green and may be clicked to view the corresponding animation.

Change the day

You can change the day by clicking on the "Previous Day" and "Next Day" links below the calendar at the bottom of the page. This will cause the calendar to display only the extra animations available through that day. You can only use the "Next Day" link to advance the day to today's date. Sorry, no peeking ahead allowed!

Example: On 8 December you can click the "Previous Day" button to set the calendar back to 7 December. The scene will be as it was on that date, bauble number 7 will be red, and numbers 1-6 and 8 will all be green.

You can always click the "Current Day" link to return to today's date.

Shrink to the snow globe

There are three ways to shrink the Advent Calendar back into the snow globe.

  1. Press the Esc key on your keyboard.

  2. Click the "Shrink Village" or "Shrink City" link in the lower right-hand corner.

  3. Click the Menu link in the lower right-hand corner and select the "Leave Village" or "Leave London" option.

Close the Advent Calendar

If the Advent Calendar is open, click the "Menu" link in the lower, right hand corner and select Quit Advent Calendar. If the Advent Calendar is in the snow globe then single click the globe and select "Quit" from the menu.

Move the snow globe

If you need to move the snow globe then move your mouse over it and hold down the left mouse button. This will allow you to drag the snow globe to any position on your screen. When you have the snow globe where you want it simply let go of the left mouse button. Don't worry about moving the snow globe to the left side of your screen. The menu will automatically switch to the right side of the snow globe if it is pushed off the screen.
