From dress and furnishings textiles to designs for china and wrapping paper, Bev has done it all! So it shouldn’t be all too surprising that back in the early 2000s, her friend and neighbour, Jacquie, asked her to provide artwork for her budding new ecards business. And now, having been with us for over 20 years, Bev’s unique art style has become inseparable from the Jacquie Lawson charm we all know and love. We sat down with Bev for a chat about her art, inspirations and more.
JL: You've been with Jacquie Lawson since the very beginning. How did you first become involved, and what was it like creating ecards in those early days?
BPH: Moving into the same village as Jacquie, we became good friends and started playing together with Jaquies’s interest in animation, me being amazed and throwing in the odd scribble. When jacquielawson.com was born I started working freelance art for her. We had fun!
JL: What was the first Jacquie Lawson card you worked on?
BPH: I cannot remember, too far back, maybe flowers or a watering can?!
JL: Where do you find inspiration for your artwork? Are there particular places, seasons, or experiences that spark new ideas?
BPH: I am a compulsive collector and hoarder of anything. A particular weakness of mine, old and new books. My work shed and our cottage are insulated with them. However, my untidy garden along with its wildlife goes a long way. Sharp winter days, woolly jumpers, and rough seas raise my spirits.
JL: You've created everything from ecards to Advent Calendars and now Postbox cards. How has your creative process evolved over the years?
BPH: Working for JL full time, in the early days, I had already adjusted to working to a smaller scale, having been a textile designer, mainly for furnishings, all my working life. As we have grown, working with a larger team of people to produce our finished work is very interesting and enjoyable.
JL: Looking back, is there a Jacquie Lawson card, Advent Calendar, or project you're especially proud of? What makes it special to you?
BPH: The one card I always think of when asked this question is ‘Turkey in the Straw’. It was a lot of fun to put together with Jacquie and still makes me smile!
