If you’ve seen our interviews with artists Lucia and Svetlana, you’ll know that we reached out to them and asked them to create their gorgeous Postbox collections. But it wasn’t just artists new to us whose expertise we requested. Drew King has been with us for years and until now has mostly worked on our Advent Calendars, but we knew that his refined colour palette and delicate detail would translate into a stunning Postbox collection. We sat down with Drew to ask him more about his work and inspiration, and to see if he had any advice for budding artists.
JL: Tell us a little about yourself.
DK: I work as an animator and illustrator, and I also do my own personal work, such as painting and filmmaking. Over the years, I have been involved in many exhibitions. I just finished a short, animated film, which I am currently entering in various festivals. The short is a Semi Finalist in the Columbus Author and Photography Festival and is posted on Instagram and Vimeo.
JL: What inspires you, and how do you stay inspired?
DK: Going for a walk or a hike clears my head. I'm always looking for new ideas in art and film. We have a great art museum, the Cleveland Art Museum, which I always enjoy visiting.
JL: Do you have a favourite design in this collection? Why is it your favourite?
DK: I really like the World Textiles Stationery because of the folk-art design and vibrant colour.
JL: As an artist, what is the best piece of advice you've ever received – or would give to aspiring artists?
DK: Find something you like in the thing you create and build on that. I'd also say that for me the best way to find out what you want to create starts by doing it. Sounds simplistic but it works for me.
